BLACK GOSPEL PIANO

LESSON 20

Black gospel piano uses a lot of triplets, syncopation, and rhythm and blues techniques.  This web site does not have the space to give you an encompassing review of various black gospel rhythm patterns but since this website is dedicated to beginners, I'll start you out with a fairly easy one that has a bouncy beat to it.  Again this is a two handed accompaniment pattern.  Below is the 3/4 time version that can be used on Amazing Grace.

Try this pattern out on a G major chord.  Set your left and right hands up for a G major chord in the root position.

There are five parts that make up this pattern.

1. For non music readers the sequence would be G-B-D (fast triplet) in left hand.
2. Then a solid right hand chord, all three keys played at once (GBD)
3.
Then the right hand quickly shifts to a C major chord in the 1st inversion position:  (GCE).  Play it as a solid chord.
4. Then return the right had quickly back to the G chord root position (GBD).
5. Finish it with a left hand single D note, using your thumb.

What I am giving you here is a black gospel accompaniment pattern in 3/4 time.  Try it on a song such as AMAZING GRACE which consists of the chords G major, C major, and D major.  When you come to the C and D major chords just use the same exact finger movements and you will be right on target.  Remember, keyboard patterns are nothing but repetitious finger movements.

Listen to the midi file to hear how this pattern sounds as an accompaniment pattern for AMAZING GRACE.  Remember, midi files sound kind of choppy, they are not like the real thing as when you are actually playing on a piano, but these midi files are the best I can do to get you to hear how the patterns are suppose to sound.  Also, remember that this midi file does not represent the way the song would be played in a professional setting, because the midi file plays the same pattern over and over so that you can learn it.  In actuality, if you were playing this song in black gospel style you would use a lot more patterns and a bunch of rhythm and blues techniques.  I am just over emphasizing the pattern in this midi file so that you can learn it.  CLICK HERE TO HEAR THE PATTERN.
