What A Friend We Have In Jesus

In this lesson you are going to look at a basic lead sheet of this wonderful hymn.  Click on to this PDF FILE LINK to open up the lead sheet.

The first thing you should do before you play a song is to analyze the patterns.  Notice that you have two basic types of measures and they alternate back and forth.  The first measure has a dotted quarter note followed by an eighth note.  The last two beats of the first measure is a set of beamed quarter notes.

The second measure is two half notes or a whole note.  Notice how this slower measure alternates between a measure with two half notes and a measure with a whole note.  Once you see the patterns in a song then it becomes very easy to memorize a song and sing it or play it flawlessly.

Next, let's have you look at a simple chord and melody arrangement of this song.  Open up this PDF file and print out the arrangement.  Also, you can listen to the midi file.

Once you have the left hand chords under control, you can begin to create piano accompaniment patterns to back up singers or instrumentalist.  This arrangement has the basic Pattern One in it, but it also has a lot of bass runs in-between the chord changes.  Also, there is a color tone pattern.  Open up the PDF file and print it up.  Listen to the midi file of this arrangement after you print the music.  Watch the music as you play the midi file so that you can hear how the patterns and bass runs sound when you match them up on the printed music manuscript paper.

Jesus is the best friend you could ever have.  He can rescue you out of any problem that the world throws at you.  I knew this fellow who was dabbling in the occult.  One night when he was alone in his house, he felt a terrible presence of evil in his room.  The room became cold.  The hair on his arms stood up.  His body was vibrating all over and his mind was in absolute terror.  He remembered that I told him that if he ever got into spiritual trouble that all he had to do was to call out the name of Jesus over and over and over.  He remembered, and he started crying out loud to Jesus.  The evil force immediately left the room, and this person was able to calm down and feel secure again.  Today this person is a believer and follower of Jesus Christ.  Some lessons in life are difficult to learn, but they have lasting benefits.

Do not dabble in the occult:  Ouija boards, astrology, numerology, palmistry, channeling, seeking the dead, eastern meditation (yoga), Eastern religions, Edgar Cayce, reincarnation, mind control, astral projection, and the such.  You don't need these things to have a satisfying spiritual experience.  All you need is the friendship of Jesus.  Just talk to Him everyday.  Include Jesus in everything that you do and you will have a glorious fulfilling spiritual experience that will produce testimony after testimony in your life and become a blessing to others.

Have you ever noticed that people who seek these self improvement courses and who dabble in these occultic activities never seem to really improve.  They are always going from one seminar to another seeking the truth.  They are seeking the truth but never finding it.  A person will only find the truth in the friendship of Jesus Christ.

Here are the lyrics:

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer.
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness, take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior still our refuge, take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer.
In His arms He'll take and shield thee, thou wilt find a solace there.
