CANON IN D - Johann Pachelbel

The Canon in D Major or ( Kanon ) is a well known
musical composition from the Baroque period. There have been literally
thousands of arrangements of this song. It is frequently heard at
weddings. Even famous popular singers down through the years have borrowed
heavily from this wonderful song.
Pachelbel's life extended from 1653 to 1706.
He began his musical career under the tutelage of Schwemmer and then went on to
study music at the University in Altdorf and in Ratisbon. Then he moved to
Vienna in 1671 where he again became a student, but also achieved the position
of deputy organist at the Imperial chapel. He taught music to members of
the Bach family and his style greatly influenced J.S. Bach, especially in the
area of chorale arrangements.
A Canon is a type of music in which the melodic
line is often repeated and imitated by other instruments or voices.
Instruments are added one by one as the music progresses, creating echoing, and
interweaving melodies.
This is an interesting song, because a lot of
people like to listen to it when they are happy, but they also find comfort in
listening to it when they are sad. It seems to have a positive effect on
people when they hear it. It is used sometimes in the area of music
therapy.

This is a simple arrangement of this song. You can simply play the chords
in the left hand while you play the melody in the right hand. This song
challenges the beginner to learn the higher notes on the scale. The notes
that go above the treble staff have ledger lines and you must learn the names of
these notes and where they are found on the piano.
