HOW TO TUNE THE GUITAR

TUNING THE 6TH STRING:  E

You begin by either tightening or loosening the 6th string on the guitar to arrive at a basic low sounding pitch that is close to E.  The remaining 5 strings on your guitar will be tuned relative to the 6th string.  You have to assume that the 6th string is fairly in pitch.  If you have an electronic tuner then you can be certain that you are on true pitch for E.

Click on the midi file link to hear low E.  You can even tune your guitar to this midi file.

TUNING THE 5TH STRING A

Press down at the 5th fret on the 6th string and that will produce an A note.  Pluck the 6th string A note, and at the same time pluck the open 5th string, which is also the same A note.  You want to either tighten or loosen the open fifth string A to match the 6th string A.

Once you have these two strings in tune with each other, then you can move onto the next set of two strings, which will be the 5th and 4th string combination.
